The 1997 Cowtown Kickoff Classic was an outstanding success as 24 men's, women's and
college teams squared off for the coveted title of "Cowtown Kickoff Champions."
At the end of the weekend, only two men's teams were left unblemished, with Fort Worth RFC
claiming their own tournament for the first time, and the University of Texas claiming the
college championship. In the women's pool play, the Houston Herricanes played to a 2-0
record for the women's title, and Rice University claimed the women's college title with
the same record.
The men's championship was a virtual rematch of the 1997 Division II Western RFU
Championship as the top three finishers met again, this time in the hot Texas heat. The
Denver Harlequins, third at Westerns, advanced through pool play with a 3-0 record,
scoring 76 and allowing only 5 points on the day. The Woodlands, second at Westerns,
advanced with a 2-1 record, with their sole loss coming against the Harlequins in a
hard-fought 15-5 match. The 1997 Western Champion, Fort Worth RFC, advanced with a 3-0
record, defeating the Fort Sill and the Houston Old Boys in the process. The final
qualifier was Division III Fort Hood, with their best Cowtown performance ever.
The first semifinal had The Woodlands forfeiting to Fort Worth due to the injuries
suffered in pool play, but the second turned out to be a fine game. Fort Hood fought hard,
taking a 6-5 lead into the second half, but the fitness and running style of the
Harlequins became too much as the Harlequins took the match 15-6.
The stage was now set for a rematch of the Western semi-final, won by Fort Worth 26-19
in April. That match required a herculean effort on Fort Worth's part to overcome a 19-7
halftime deficit. The match in the Cowtown Final would prove to be very different.
Domination in the scrums proved too much for the Harlequins as Fort Worth ran to a
convincing 41-0 victory. Four of Fort Worth's six tries were scored on push-over scrums,
including two taken against the head. These four tries were split equally between Number
Eight Warren Tucker and Scrum Half Theo Van Wyk. The other two tries came on plays
directly from line-outs, including one on a spectacular run by fullback Dan Rosen, and
another on a bobbled line-out picked up by flanker Dan Morgan. The remaining scoring came
by the foot of fly-half Henno Terblanche, who converted 4 of 6 tries and made his only
penalty kick attempt.
Fort Worth would like to thank all the participants in this year's tournament. Their
outstanding play made the 1997 tournament the most successful ever. In addition, thanks go
to the Society of Texas Rugby Referrees, as well as the numerous supporters, sponsors, and
fans who helped provide a quality event.
